We wrapped up Fire Prevention Week with presentations from the Northern Reynolds County Fire Protection District! We are so appreciative of these volunteers taking time out of their day to educate our students on this important topic. The kids loved it!

The second grade students have been studying properties of materials. Last week, each student made a boat using only notebook paper and masking tape. The goal was to see how many pennies their boat could hold before sinking. It was a close race, but Maggie's boat held the most at 132 pennies. Today we talked about what made Maggie's boat better and how we could make an even better boat. The students decided that we needed it to be thicker and more water resistant. Therefore, each student colored a sheet of paper front and back with crayons since crayons are made of wax and wax repels water. Then they put their pieces together and used A LOT of masking tape! We used every penny we had (206) and our new and better boat held those pennies for an hour and a half before sinking! Great job second grade!
